Situated just off England’s South coast and less than 2 hours from London via ferry, is the picturesque Isle of Wight. Measuring only 23 miles by 13 miles, don’t be fooled by its size; this small but mighty Island has a variety of attractions and activities making it a great holiday destination for families, couples, solo travellers and groups. Here at Easicampers, we feel that the best way to see everything this magnificent Island has to offer, is with a campervan or motorhome. Go off the beaten track through the spectacular countryside, at your own pace, stopping at any of the quality campsites the Island has to offer without having to worry about check in times or worse – pitching your own tent!
The eastern side of the island is dotted with beautiful coastal villages including Seaview, a popular yachting centre; the small village of Bembridge, best known for its large harbour; and St Helens with its large village green. Between the towns of Shanklin and Newport sits Godshill, one of the prettiest villages on the Isle of Wight, awash with thatched cottages and a medieval church. The West side of the Isle of Wight contains many characterful villages, awash with history and culture, such as traditional village of Brighstone and the Victorian escape of Freshwater, where poet Laureate Tennyson and acclaimed photographer Julia Margaret Cameron spent much of their time on the Island. For cyclists, the Isle of Wight is a regular feature in the ‘Top 10 routes in the world’, with a varied terrain and contrasting landscapes making for some great rides, all of Easicampers motorhomes and campervans come with bike racks fitted as standard.
The Isle of Wight is regarded as one of the richest areas for Dinosaur discovery in Europe, which has already earned it the title “Dinosaur Island”. In addition to that it was named the UK’s Dinosaur Capital as part of a new Dinosaur Map of Britain, which was compiled by Dr Paul Barrett, Merit Researcher from the Natural History Museum! There is a great range of dinosaur attractions and activities available on the Isle of Wight, with some fantastic opportunities for dinosaur and fossil enthusiasts. These include museums such as the award winning Dinosaur Isle, fossil hunts with experts such as Dinosaur Fossil Hunts and Footprint Tours, and also beaches such as Brook where you can discover your own fossils! Try the all new Dinosaur Experience at Blackgang Chine, the first of its kind in the UK, with your chance to get “up close and personal” with two baby Tyrannosaurus Rex flanked by their trained handlers. You can also dare to enter “Restricted Area 5” with one of the biggest collections of animatronic dinosaurs in the world!
For music lovers, the iconic Isle of Wight Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, with its root in the halcyon days of rock and roll. This festival staged a comeback in 2002 and has grown from strength to strength since, now featuring some of the biggest acts in the world, along with the hottest up and coming artists. Why not hire one of our VW California campervans, compact enough so as to still give you that ‘camping’ feel but with the luxury of two double beds and cooking facilities – and you won’t have the stress of pitching and un-pitching a pesky tent (especially if the weather isn’t favourable)!
